What genre is the Donkey Konga series?

The story behind the answer

What genre is the Donkey Konga series? The answer is rhythm.

Donkey Konga is a series of rhythm video games in which players follow musical prompts by striking drums and clapping at the correct moments. The gameplay is built around timing, musical patterns, and performance accuracy rather than combat, racing, or strategic resource management.

Namco developed the games for Nintendo, drawing on experience from its Taiko no Tatsujin rhythm-game series. Nintendo released the original Donkey Konga for the GameCube in 2003, followed by Donkey Konga 2 in 2004 and Donkey Konga 3 in Japan in 2005. The series used the DK Bongos as its signature controller, though ordinary GameCube controllers were supported.

The Donkey Kong branding can cause confusion because the wider franchise is strongly associated with platform games such as Donkey Kong Country. Donkey Konga is a spin-off, not a traditional platformer. Its track lists also varied by region: Japanese, North American, and PAL versions did not always contain the same songs, and some Western releases used shortened covers of licensed music.
