Georgia O'Keeffe's record-setting 1932 painting depicts a jimson weed flower. Titled Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1, the work shows a large white blossom against a dark background and became one of O'Keeffe's best-known flower paintings.
In November 2014, the painting sold at Sotheby's in New York for $44.405 million, including the buyer's premium. That price made it the most expensive painting by a female artist sold at auction at that time. The buyer was the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Jimson weed, also called Datura, is a poisonous plant. O'Keeffe painted flowers at unusually large scale, encouraging viewers to examine forms they might otherwise overlook. The 2014 record was later surpassed by works by other women artists, so it describes the auction market at that date rather than a permanent record.
