Georgia O'Keeffe painted a jimson weed flower in her 1932 work Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1.
The painting presents a large white jimson weed blossom against a dark background. O'Keeffe frequently enlarged flowers so that viewers had to confront their structure and detail rather than glance at them as small decorative objects. Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 is one of the clearest examples of that approach.
The work became especially famous after being sold at auction in 2014 for $44.4 million, including the buyer's premium. At the time, that sale set a record for the highest price paid at auction for a work by a female artist. The record later changed as other works by women artists reached higher prices.
The flower is also known as Datura, a plant recognized for its trumpet-shaped blooms and toxicity. It should not be confused with O'Keeffe's many paintings of poppies, irises, or sunflowers, which are separate subjects in her flower imagery.
