Colonial drummer
Answer
Colonial drummer
A colonial drummer appeared on the reverse of the U.S. quarter issued for the 1976 Bicentennial.
The Bicentennial coin program temporarily redesigned the reverse sides of the Washington quarter, Kennedy half dollar, and Eisenhower dollar. The quarter showed a colonial drummer beside a torch surrounded by thirteen stars, linking the coin to the Revolutionary era and the original colonies.
The three circulating coins carried the dual date 1776–1976 rather than a single year. Their other reverse designs were Independence Hall on the half dollar and the Liberty Bell superimposed against the Moon on the dollar.
These coins were struck in both 1975 and 1976, but all carried the 1776–1976 date. That detail often causes confusion: a coin physically minted in 1975 can still be a 1976 Bicentennial coin. The designs remain common because very large quantities were produced.
