What figure appeared on the reverse of the 1976 United States Bicentennial quarter?

The story behind the answer

A colonial drummer appeared on the reverse of the 1976 United States Bicentennial quarter.

The United States Mint temporarily redesigned the reverses of the quarter, half dollar, and dollar for the Bicentennial. Jack L. Ahr’s design for the quarter showed a colonial drummer with a victory torch surrounded by 13 stars, representing the original thirteen states. The coin carried the dual date 1776–1976.

The other two circulating Bicentennial coins had different reverses: the half dollar showed Independence Hall, while the Eisenhower dollar showed the Liberty Bell superimposed on the Moon. All three designs were selected through a nationwide competition.

The Bicentennial quarter is often mistaken for a normal 1976 Washington quarter because Washington remained on the obverse. However, the reverse was changed only temporarily. After the Bicentennial issue, the quarter returned to its regular reverse design, and there were no 1975-dated Bicentennial quarters.
