What fictional university is the setting of the Bruces sketch?

The story behind the answer

The fictional university in the “Bruces” sketch is the University of Woolamaloo.

The sketch presents a Philosophy Department populated by several Australian men named Bruce. When an English newcomer, Michael Baldwin, arrives, the repeated name becomes a source of confusion and he is invited to adopt “Bruce” as well. The setting is deliberately exaggerated: the department appears to occupy a rough outback building, with Uluru visible in the background.

“Woolamaloo” is not a real university. The name is generally understood as a comic alteration of Woolloomooloo, an inner-city suburb of Sydney. Its spelling and pronunciation help create the sketch’s stylised version of Australian speech and geography.

The sketch was written by John Cleese and Eric Idle and later appeared in stage performances and on the album Matching Tie and Handkerchief. A related performance ends with “Bruces’ Philosophers Song.” The real University of Wollongong is a separate Australian institution and is the most plausible source of confusion, but it is not the university named in the sketch.
