McDonaldland was the fictional town used as the setting for many McDonald’s character advertisements.
McDonaldland gave McDonald’s a shared fantasy setting in which its advertising characters could interact. Ronald McDonald served as the central figure, while characters including Grimace, the Hamburglar, Mayor McCheese, and Birdie the Early Bird appeared in different campaigns.
The setting helped McDonald’s create continuity across television commercials, packaging, restaurant promotions, and children’s merchandise. Instead of presenting each character in isolation, the company could place them in a recognizable branded world with recurring locations and story ideas.
McDonaldland is sometimes confused with the McDonald’s restaurant chain itself or with the company’s playground equipment. It was primarily an advertising universe. Its prominence declined as McDonald’s advertising moved toward simpler product-focused and lifestyle campaigns, but the name remains central to the chain’s character-based branding history.
