What fictional sport is played on broomsticks in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter world?

The story behind the answer

The fictional broomstick sport in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter world is Quidditch.

Quidditch is played by two teams of seven players flying on broomsticks. Players use three kinds of balls: one Quaffle, two Bludgers and one Golden Snitch. Different positions have distinct responsibilities during a match.

Chasers try to score through the opposing team’s hoops with the Quaffle, while Beaters defend their teammates from Bludgers. The Keeper guards the hoops, and the Seeker pursues the Golden Snitch. Catching the Snitch usually ends the match and awards 150 points.

Quidditch is fictional in the novels, although real-world versions were later created by fans and universities. It should not be confused with Gobstones or wizard chess, which are separate magical games.
