The Animus is the fictional device used to read genetic memories in Assassin's Creed.
Modern users enter the Animus to experience memories inherited through their DNA from ancestors. This science-fiction framework allows the series to move between a present-day storyline and historical adventures without treating the historical sections as ordinary time travel. The device is associated with Abstergo Industries and later with Assassin organizations.
The Animus also provides the series' explanation for gameplay features such as memory synchronization, desynchronization, and replaying major events. In the story, users do not literally travel into the past; they access reconstructed ancestral memories through technology.
Eagle Vision is a perception ability used by characters inside historical simulations, not the machine itself. The Bleeding Effect is a condition caused by prolonged Animus exposure, while the Observatory is an Isu-related location in Black Flag. These terms are closely connected to the series but are not synonyms for the device.
