The Animus is the fictional device that lets modern characters relive genetic memories in Assassin's Creed.
In the series, the Animus reads inherited memories encoded in a person's DNA and presents them as an interactive simulation. This framework allows modern characters to experience the lives of ancestors such as Altaïr, Ezio, Connor, and Edward.
The device is also the narrative bridge between historical action and the modern-day storyline. Different versions appear across the series, including Abstergo's commercial Helix system and later portable or specialized Animus technologies.
The Animus does not literally send a person through time. It reconstructs memories, and the series sometimes shows inaccuracies, synchronization limits, or gaps in the available genetic record. The Bleeding Effect is a separate phenomenon: it describes skills or behaviors leaking into the user's mind after prolonged Animus exposure.
