What fictional country is the setting of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books?

The story behind the answer

The fictional country at the center of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books is Narnia.

Narnia is a fantasy world populated by humans, talking animals, mythical creatures, and other beings. The seven novels known collectively as The Chronicles of Narnia follow different characters and periods in the country’s long history.

Narnia is ruled or defended at different times by figures including Aslan, Peter Pevensie, Caspian, and other human and animal characters. The series begins with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in publication order and ends with The Last Battle.

Narnia should not be confused with the entire universe described in the books. The wider setting includes places such as Archenland, Calormen, and the world from which the human visitors originate. Narnia itself is the central country and namesake of the series.
