The original game turns ordinary locations—homes, schools, shops, roads, parks, and waterways—into places where Yo-kai trouble can erupt. That everyday setting is central to the series’ comedy: strange paranormal events appear inside familiar parts of a child’s daily life.

Players may see the city’s name rendered differently depending on the version. The Japanese setting is called Sakura New Town, while the localized English games and anime use Springdale. That localization is why names such as Nate Adams and Katie Forester also differ from their Japanese counterparts. Twoson and Onett are towns from EarthBound, while Inkopolis belongs to Splatoon, making them unrelated distractors.
