What fast food restaurant sells the Big Mac?

The story behind the answer

The fast-food restaurant that sells the Big Mac is McDonald’s. The sandwich is one of the international chain’s signature menu items and is closely associated with the Golden Arches brand.

The Big Mac was created by McDonald’s franchisee Jim Delligatti in the Pittsburgh area. It first appeared at a McDonald’s restaurant in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, in 1967, before being added to McDonald’s restaurants nationwide in 1968.

Its best-known design uses two beef patties, a middle slice of bread, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and the chain’s “special sauce.” The three-part sesame-seed bun is what gives the burger its distinctive double-decker appearance.

People sometimes confuse the Big Mac with similarly structured burgers from other chains, especially Big Boy’s double-decker sandwich, which helped inspire Delligatti’s creation. Regional versions also vary: in India, where beef is generally not used, McDonald’s sells the chicken-based Maharaja Mac instead.
