Carole King plays the music-store owner Sophie Bloom in several episodes of Gilmore Girls. Sophie runs the music shop in Stars Hollow, where Lane Kim practices drums and becomes involved in the town’s music scene.
King’s appearance is a particularly enjoyable piece of casting because she was already one of popular music’s most celebrated singer-songwriters. Her credits include “It’s Too Late,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” and the album Tapestry, one of the best-known singer-songwriter records of the early 1970s.
Gilmore Girls fans may also recognize King’s voice before they recognize her on screen: she and her daughter Louise Goffin performed the theme song, “Where You Lead.” Sophie Bloom should not be confused with Lane’s bandmates or with the musicians who perform at the town’s venues; Sophie is specifically the shop owner and a recurring supporting character.
