What failed SMS food-ordering idea preceded Reddit? The answer is My Mobile Menu.
My Mobile Menu was the failed SMS food-ordering idea that preceded Reddit. Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian originally imagined a service that would let customers send text messages to restaurants and order food from their mobile phones.
The idea belonged to a pre-smartphone era, when mobile internet and app-based ordering were not yet normal. The service was intended to make pickup more convenient: a customer could place an order by phone rather than waiting at the restaurant. Y Combinator was not persuaded by the concept itself, but Paul Graham saw potential in the founders and pushed them to think of another startup idea.
That second idea became Reddit, which Y Combinator accepted into its first class in 2005. Huffman and Ohanian launched Reddit in June of that year, changing from a transactional food service to a social news and discussion platform. The name is sometimes written “MyMobileMenu” in biographical accounts, but “My Mobile Menu” is the canonical spaced form used in Reddit’s history.
