The Pan-European Picnic on August 19, 1989, symbolized the opening of the Iron Curtain. Held near Sopron on the Hungary–Austria border, it became one of the most important early breakthroughs in the collapse of Communist rule in Eastern Europe.

The event was organized by Hungarian opposition activists and the Paneuropean Union, with Otto von Habsburg and Imre Pozsgay among its prominent sponsors. During the gathering, a border gate was symbolically opened for a short time. Hundreds of East German citizens who had traveled to Hungary used the opportunity to cross into Austria, exposing how vulnerable the once tightly controlled border had become.

The picnic did not itself bring down the Berlin Wall, which opened on November 9, 1989. Instead, it helped trigger a chain reaction. Hungary dismantled much of its border barrier with Austria, East Germans began fleeing through Hungary, and pressure on the East German government intensified. The Velvet Revolution and the Monday demonstrations were also important events of 1989, but neither took place on August 19 nor directly represents this border opening.
