Simone Biles won her first Olympic gold medal in the team event at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. She helped the United States win the women’s team all-around final, earning the team the nickname “Final Five.”

Biles then won three individual gold medals in Rio: the individual all-around, vault and floor exercise. Because the individual all-around title is often treated as her signature Olympic achievement, it is sometimes mistakenly identified as her first Olympic gold. The team final, however, took place earlier in the Games.

The Rio team victory was the beginning of Biles’ historic Olympic campaign. She won four gold medals and five medals overall, becoming the first American female gymnast to win four golds at a single Olympics. She also earned bronze on balance beam.
