What evening display is listed among common Canada Day celebrations?

The story behind the answer

Fireworks are an evening display commonly listed among Canada Day celebrations.

Fireworks became associated with the holiday from its earliest observances. Contemporary accounts of the first Confederation anniversary in 1867 describe bonfires, fireworks, illuminations, military displays, excursions, and musical entertainment. Today, many communities stage fireworks after outdoor concerts and daytime festivities.

Canada Day celebrations are not identical everywhere. Local programs may also include parades, carnivals, festivals, barbecues, air or maritime shows, free concerts, and citizenship ceremonies. Fireworks are therefore a common tradition rather than a legally required part of the holiday, and some municipalities change or cancel displays because of weather, fire risk, cost, or local policy.

Ottawa’s national celebration has historically paired an evening program with a large fireworks display, helping make fireworks one of the most recognizable images of the holiday. The display should not be confused with the holiday’s historical meaning: Canada Day commemorates Confederation on July 1, 1867, while the fireworks are a celebratory custom that developed around public observances.
