What drive configuration did the Ford Model T use?

The Ford Model T used rear-wheel drive.

Its front-mounted four-cylinder engine sent power through the transmission to the rear axle. The rear wheels therefore provided propulsion, while the front wheels steered the car.

The Model T’s transmission was unusual by modern standards: it used a planetary gearset operated by foot pedals rather than a conventional hand-shift gearbox. This arrangement helped make the car relatively easy for inexperienced drivers to operate.

The answer is sometimes confused with four-wheel drive because Model Ts were famous for handling rough roads and were adapted into trucks, tractors, and utility vehicles. Standard Model Ts were not four-wheel-drive vehicles. Their high ground clearance, sturdy construction, and flexible suspension—not all-wheel traction—gave them much of their rough-road reputation.
