What double date appeared on U.S. Bicentennial coins connected to the anniversary tradition behind America250?

The story behind the answer

The double date 1776–1976 appeared on U.S. Bicentennial coins connected to the anniversary tradition behind America250.

The United States Mint placed the double date on the quarter, Kennedy half dollar, and Eisenhower dollar issued for the Bicentennial. These coins were struck in 1975 and 1976, but all carried 1776–1976 to show the 200-year span being commemorated.

The temporary designs covered three circulating denominations. The quarter showed a colonial drummer, the half dollar featured Independence Hall, and the dollar depicted the Liberty Bell and the Moon. The designs were created specifically for the Bicentennial period.

America250 follows the same broad commemorative pattern, linking a founding year with a modern anniversary year. The earlier coins should not be confused with ordinary coins dated only 1975 or 1976, and the dates do not represent the Constitution’s signing in 1787.
