What dog breed has black ear tips officially referred to as 'earrings'?
Answer
Kooikerhondje
Answer
Kooikerhondje
The Kooikerhondje is the dog breed whose black ear tips are officially called “earrings.”
The earrings are black hairs or fringes at the tips of the breed’s feathered, pendant ears. They are a characteristic feature of the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje and are considered highly desirable in breed standards, although not every individual develops equally prominent black tips.
The Kooikerhondje is a small Dutch sporting dog originally bred to work at duck decoys, known in Dutch as eendenkooien. Its waving white-plumed tail and lively movement helped attract ducks toward screened channels and traps. The dog guided the birds rather than attacking them, requiring intelligence, responsiveness and persistence.
The breed nearly disappeared during the Second World War. Baroness van Hardenbroek van Ammerstol began rebuilding it in 1942, and the Dutch Kennel Club recognized the revived breed in 1971. The Kooikerhondje is sometimes compared with spaniels or the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, but its “earrings” and Dutch duck-decoy history are especially distinctive.
