What does UFC stand for?

The story behind the answer

What does UFC stand for? UFC stands for Ultimate Fighting Championship.

The name belongs to the American mixed martial arts promotion founded in 1993. Its first event, UFC 1, was held in Denver, Colorado, on November 12, 1993, and was designed to compare different fighting styles in largely open-weight contests.

A common mix-up is treating “UFC” as the name of the sport itself. The sport is mixed martial arts, or MMA; the UFC is the organization that promotes events and contracts fighters. Early UFC competitions had fewer restrictions, while later events adopted unified rules, weight classes, time limits, and prohibited techniques.

The promotion was originally created by Art Davie and Rorion Gracie with backing from Semaphore Entertainment Group. It was purchased in 2001 by Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, who installed Dana White as president. Today, the UFC is a global MMA company and part of TKO Group Holdings.
