What does TNGA stand for in Toyota's platform architecture?

TNGA stands for Toyota New Global Architecture.

Toyota introduced TNGA as a modular vehicle-platform strategy to simplify development and improve the driving characteristics of its cars. Rather than designing every model around an unrelated platform, Toyota standardized key structural and component layouts while allowing individual vehicles to retain distinct styling, dimensions, and purposes.

The fourth-generation Prius, launched in late 2015, was the first production vehicle built on a TNGA platform. The approach was developed alongside Toyota’s Dynamic Force engine family and newer transmission, hybrid, and all-wheel-drive systems. Lower centers of gravity, greater body stiffness, and lower hood lines were among the intended benefits.

TNGA does not mean “Toyota New Generation Architecture” or “Toyota Next Generation Architecture,” although both sound plausible and describe the general idea. The official word is “Global,” reflecting Toyota’s aim to use related architectures across markets. TNGA is also an umbrella strategy containing platforms such as TNGA-C for compact vehicles and TNGA-F for trucks and SUVs, rather than one single chassis shared identically by every Toyota.
