What does the Swatch brand name stand for?
Answer
Second watch
Answer
Second watch
The Swatch brand name stands for “second watch.” The phrase described the product as an affordable, casual companion to a person’s main or traditional timepiece, rather than as a formal luxury watch.
That idea was central to Swatch’s launch strategy during the quartz crisis of the 1970s and 1980s. Swiss manufacturers were losing ground to inexpensive, battery-powered quartz watches, so Swatch pursued a low-cost plastic design that could be produced efficiently while still looking fashionable and expressive.
Swatch launched its first collection of 12 models in Zürich on 1 March 1983. Prices initially ranged from CHF 39.90 to CHF 49.90 before being standardized at CHF 50 later that year. “Swiss watch” is a tempting interpretation because the brand is Swiss, but it is not the official expansion given for the name.
