What does the school-focused acronym STEM stand for?

The story behind the answer

The education acronym STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The acronym groups four connected fields often emphasized in school curricula, workforce planning, and educational policy. It describes subject areas rather than one specific teaching method or school program. STEM lessons may combine scientific investigation, mathematical reasoning, engineering design, and technological tools.

The term became especially prominent in the United States during the 1990s. The National Science Foundation had previously used the acronym SMET, but STEM gained wider acceptance after educators and science administrators adopted it. One early NSF-related project using STEM was STEMTEC, founded at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1998.

STEM is sometimes confused with STEAM, which adds arts, or STEMM, which adds medicine. Those are expanded variations, while the standard four-letter acronym refers only to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
