Answer
Country, BlueGrass, and Blues
CBGB stands for Country, BlueGrass, and Blues.
The full name was CBGB & OMFUG, with OMFUG meaning "Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers." Hilly Kristal opened the club at 315 Bowery in Manhattan in December 1973. Although the name suggested country, bluegrass, and blues, the venue soon became strongly associated with New York's emerging punk and underground rock scenes.
Television, Patti Smith Group, the Ramones, Blondie, and Talking Heads were among the acts connected with CBGB during the 1970s. The club's cramped stage and rough presentation helped establish a distinctive downtown scene. CBGB closed in October 2006 after a dispute over its lease. The initials are therefore not an abbreviation for a generic phrase such as "Club Bands, Guitars, and Beats"; they preserve Kristal's original musical concept.
