What does 'AMA' stand for in Reddit?

On Reddit, “AMA” stands for “Ask Me Anything.”

An AMA is a question-and-answer session in which a person or group invites Reddit users to submit questions. The guest then responds publicly in a discussion thread, often revealing details about a profession, personal experience, creative project, or public event. The format can be informal, but notable guests frequently verify their identity with moderators.

The best-known home for the format is r/IAmA, whose name means “I Am A.” The community grew from earlier Reddit question threads and was formally created in May 2009. AMAs later became a major part of Reddit’s public identity, attracting celebrities, scientists, authors, athletes, business leaders, and political figures.

“AMA” is sometimes confused with “Ask Me Again,” but that is not the standard Reddit meaning. The acronym is also used outside Reddit for similar public interview sessions, while “IAmA” identifies the subreddit and the introductory phrase used by participants.
