What did the United Fruit Company eventually become?

The story behind the answer

The United Fruit Company eventually became Chiquita Brands International.

Founded in 1899, United Fruit grew into a powerful multinational involved in banana production, railways, shipping, and plantations across Latin America and the Caribbean. Its influence was so extensive that critics nicknamed it “the Octopus.” The company also became associated with labor disputes and political intervention, including controversy surrounding Guatemala and Colombia.

In 1970, United Fruit merged with AMK Corporation and adopted the name United Brands Company. The Chiquita banana label, however, was already one of its best-known consumer brands. After further corporate changes, the company adopted the name Chiquita Brands International in 1990.

A common mix-up is answering “United Brands.” That was the company’s intermediate corporate name, not its eventual modern identity. Chiquita is the successor brand and company most directly associated with United Fruit’s corporate transformation.
