What did Satan tempt Jesus to change stones into?

Satan tempted Jesus to change stones into bread during Jesus’ forty-day fast in the wilderness. The episode is described in the Gospel of Matthew, where the devil challenges Jesus to prove his identity by using divine power to satisfy his hunger.

In Matthew 4:1–4, Jesus has been fasting and is hungry when the tempter says, in effect, that he should command stones to become bread. Jesus refuses and responds with a quotation from Deuteronomy: “One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

This is the first of three temptations in Matthew’s account. The next involves jumping from the Temple to force angelic protection, and the final one offers Jesus authority over the world in exchange for worship. Jesus rejects all three challenges.

The account also appears in Luke 4, with differences in wording and in the order of the later temptations. Mark mentions Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness but does not provide the same detailed three-part dialogue. “Bread” is therefore the canonical answer, while “food” is a broader paraphrase rather than the specific word used in Matthew’s scene.
