Krist Novoselic played bass in the band Nirvana. He was the group’s bassist and a co-founder alongside guitarist and vocalist Kurt Cobain.
Novoselic and Cobain formed Nirvana in 1987 in the Pacific Northwest, where the band became a major part of Seattle’s grunge scene. Novoselic’s bass lines helped provide the low-end foundation beneath Cobain’s guitar and Dave Grohl’s drumming, particularly on the albums Nevermind and In Utero.
Although Novoselic occasionally contributed vocals and played other instruments in later projects, bass is the defining answer for his role in Nirvana. He also played acoustic bass and accordion during Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance, but those additional instruments do not change his primary band position.
Nirvana ended in 1994 after Cobain’s death. Novoselic later performed with groups including Sweet 75, Eyes Adrift, Flipper, and Giants in the Trees, and he contributed bass and accordion to Foo Fighters’ 2011 album Wasting Light. For the quiz question, “bass” is the single canonical answer.
