What did Jesus do at the wedding in Cana?

The story behind the answer

At the wedding in Cana, Jesus turned water into wine. The episode appears in the Gospel of John, chapter 2, and is presented as Jesus’ first sign or miracle in that Gospel.

Jesus, his mother, and his disciples attend a wedding feast in Cana of Galilee. When the wine runs out, Jesus instructs servants to fill six large stone jars with water. They draw some out and take it to the master of the feast, who discovers that it has become wine—remarking that the best wine has been saved for last.

Readers sometimes confuse Cana with other miracles, such as the feeding of the 5,000 or the raising of Lazarus. The story is distinctive because it takes place at a wedding and because John calls it a “sign,” emphasizing what it reveals about Jesus. The exact location of ancient Cana remains debated.
