Natalie Cole’s hit single “Pink Cadillac” is from the Eighties. Cole recorded her version in 1987, and it was released as a single in March 1988 from her album Everlasting, making the decade answer clearly the 1980s.
The song was originally written and recorded by Bruce Springsteen, who released it as the B-side of “Dancing in the Dark” in 1984. Natalie Cole’s version gave the song a brighter R&B and pop profile and became one of her biggest late-career successes. Producer Dennis Lambert encouraged Cole to record it.
Cole’s recording reached number five on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Cashbox Top 100 in May 1988. It also reached number nine on Billboard’s R&B chart and topped the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart after a remix by David Cole and Robert Clivilles.
The most common mix-up is identifying the song only with Springsteen’s original or treating 1987, the recording year, as a separate decade answer. Both Cole’s recording and release belong to the 1980s, so “Eighties” is the fair canonical answer.
