The hit single “Good Thing” by Fine Young Cannibals is from the Eighties.
Although it was released as a single in 1989, the song is commonly associated with the late 1980s. It appeared on the band’s second album, The Raw & the Cooked, and followed their earlier hit “She Drives Me Crazy.”
“Good Thing” first appeared in the 1987 film Tin Men, in which Fine Young Cannibals played a nightclub band. Its retro soul sound suited the film’s 1963 setting, even though the commercial single arrived two years later. Jools Holland played piano on the recording.
The song became the group’s second US number-one single, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1989. That release date can cause confusion, but 1989 is still part of the Eighties decade.
