What date is Canada Day celebrated each year?

The story behind the answer

What date is Canada Day celebrated each year? Canada Day is celebrated on July 1.

The holiday commemorates Canadian Confederation, which took effect on July 1, 1867. On that date, the Province of Canada—later divided into Ontario and Quebec—joined Nova Scotia and New Brunswick to form the Dominion of Canada within the British Empire.

The celebration was originally called Dominion Day, reflecting Canada’s constitutional status as a self-governing dominion. Parliament officially renamed it Canada Day in 1982, the year Canada’s constitution was patriated and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms came into effect.

Canada Day is a federal statutory holiday observed nationwide. Communities commonly mark it with parades, concerts, public ceremonies, fireworks, picnics, and barbecues. When July 1 falls on a Sunday, federal public-service observance is generally moved to Monday, but the national date remains July 1.

Canada Day is sometimes compared with the United States’ Independence Day, but it commemorates Confederation rather than a declaration of independence from Britain.
