What date did the Battle of Bunker Hill take place?

The story behind the answer

The Battle of Bunker Hill took place on June 17, 1775.

The battle occurred during the Siege of Boston, early in the American Revolutionary War. Colonial forces fortified Breed’s Hill on the Charlestown Peninsula, near Boston, while British troops launched repeated assaults to seize the position.

Although the battle is called Bunker Hill, most of the fighting took place on adjacent Breed’s Hill. The British eventually captured the colonial fortifications, making the engagement a British victory, but they suffered heavy casualties. The battle demonstrated that American militia could stand against regular British troops.

The action followed the battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, and preceded the Declaration of Independence by more than a year. The date is sometimes confused with the date of the war’s opening clashes or with the 1781 surrender at Yorktown, but Bunker Hill was a distinct 1775 battle near Boston.
