What date did Pixar’s film Cars premiere in U.S. theaters?

The story behind the answer

Pixar’s film Cars premiered in U.S. theaters on June 9, 2006.

The movie was Pixar’s seventh feature film and was distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. It followed Lightning McQueen, a rookie race car who becomes stranded in the small town of Radiator Springs while traveling to the Piston Cup finale.

Cars was directed by John Lasseter, who had previously directed Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, and Toy Story 2. It was also the final Pixar film released under the Disney–Pixar distribution arrangement before Disney completed its acquisition of Pixar in 2006.

The date is sometimes confused with the film’s international release dates, which varied by country. Cars opened in the United Kingdom on July 28, 2006, and in Australia on June 22, 2006. Its release was followed by Cars 2 in 2011 and Cars 3 in 2017.
