What date appears alongside 1776 on every United States Bicentennial coin?

The story behind the answer

Every United States Bicentennial coin pairs 1776 with 1976 in the double date 1776–1976.

The special quarter, half dollar, and dollar were created to commemorate the 200th anniversary of American independence. Although the Mint struck some of these coins in 1975, the coins still carried the 1776–1976 date because the anniversary year was 1976.

The temporary reverses made the coins easy to recognize. The quarter featured a colonial drummer, the half dollar depicted Independence Hall, and the dollar showed the Liberty Bell against the Moon. The obverse portraits remained standard designs for Washington, Kennedy, and Eisenhower.

The date can cause confusion because production began before the anniversary year. A 1975 minting date does not appear on these Bicentennial denominations; the official double date remained 1776–1976 regardless of when the coin was struck.
