What currency is used to buy items from NPCs in Fortnite?

The story behind the answer

Gold Bars are the currency used to buy items and services from NPCs in Fortnite. Characters around the island may offer weapons, healing supplies, quests, upgrades, or hired assistance in exchange for them.

Gold Bars were introduced in Chapter 2 Season 5, which began in December 2020. Players can typically earn them by searching cash registers and safes, opening containers, completing bounties, or eliminating opponents who carry some. Bars are held across matches rather than being spent between games, although seasons can change how they are earned and used.

They are easy to confuse with V-Bucks, but the two currencies serve different purposes. V-Bucks are Fortnite’s account-level premium currency, mainly used for cosmetic items, Battle Passes, and other purchases in the Item Shop. Gold Bars are match-based resources spent within gameplay. Their value also depends on the current season: NPC inventories, prices, and available services can change as Fortnite’s island and mechanics are redesigned.
