What currency is used officially in Jordan?

The story behind the answer

The official currency of Jordan is the Jordanian dinar. It is commonly abbreviated JOD and is divided into 1,000 fils.

The dinar was introduced in 1950, replacing the Palestinian pound in Jordan. Its name reflects the wider historical use of the word dinar across several countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

Jordan’s currency is issued by the Central Bank of Jordan. Banknotes and coins are denominated in dinars and fils, with Arabic and English appearing on Jordanian banknotes.

The Jordanian dinar is often confused with the Iraqi dinar, Kuwaiti dinar, or Bahraini dinar. These are separate national currencies, each issued by a different central bank and used in a different country.
