What currency did West Germany introduce in 1948 to replace the wartime Reichsmark?
Answer
Deutsche Mark
Answer
Deutsche Mark
West Germany introduced the Deutsche Mark in 1948 to replace the wartime Reichsmark.
The currency reform took place on 20 June 1948 in the three western occupation zones. Each person initially received a limited amount of new currency, while old Reichsmarks were exchanged under strict rules. The reform helped end the severe monetary disorder and shortages that followed the Second World War.
The Deutsche Mark was divided into 100 pfennig. It became one of Europe’s most stable currencies and was closely associated with West Germany’s postwar economic recovery, often called the Wirtschaftswunder.
The Deutsche Mark remained West Germany’s currency after reunification in 1990. Germany replaced it with the euro in 1999 for accounting and in 2002 for euro cash.
