Which currency did the Federal Republic of Germany introduce in 1990 for German reunification?
Answer
West German Deutsche Mark
Answer
West German Deutsche Mark
The Federal Republic of Germany introduced the West German Deutsche Mark in East Germany during German reunification in 1990.
On 1 July 1990, the monetary, economic and social union between West Germany and East Germany took effect. The West German Deutsche Mark became legal tender in East Germany, replacing the East German mark. Exchange rates varied by category: many wages, pensions and savings were converted at favorable rates, while other balances used less generous terms.
The currency union preceded formal political reunification, which occurred on 3 October 1990. The introduction of the Deutsche Mark was highly significant because it provided a single monetary system before the two German states became one.
This event should not be confused with Germany’s later adoption of the euro. The euro replaced the Deutsche Mark as Germany’s physical currency in 2002.
