The cryptocurrency created by Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus in 2013 was Dogecoin.
Dogecoin began as a humorous alternative to Bitcoin, inspired by the popular Doge meme featuring a Shiba Inu. Jackson Palmer, then associated with Adobe in Sydney, created the Dogecoin.com site and presented the idea, while IBM engineer Billy Markus developed the software after contacting Palmer.
Dogecoin officially launched on December 6, 2013. Its code drew on earlier cryptocurrencies, especially Litecoin and Luckycoin, and used the Scrypt proof-of-work algorithm rather than Bitcoin’s SHA-256 system. That connection explains why Litecoin is sometimes mentioned alongside Dogecoin, but Litecoin was created by Charlie Lee in 2011 and is not the answer here.
Dogecoin’s friendly image helped build an active tipping and fundraising community. Despite its joke origins, it became a widely recognized cryptocurrency with the ticker DOGE.
