What creature is the Taoist deity Xuanwu depicted as?

The story behind the answer

Xuanwu is identified with the Black Tortoise, one of the Four Symbols of Chinese cosmology. In Taoist tradition, however, he is usually depicted as a powerful warrior deity with a tortoise and snake at his feet rather than as an ordinary turtle alone.

The Black Tortoise represents the north and the winter season. Its imagery originated in the ancient Chinese system of the twenty-eight lunar mansions, probably taking shape as a cosmological symbol by the Han dynasty, from 206 BCE to 220 CE. Over time, that celestial emblem was personified as Xuanwu, also known as Zhenwu or Zhenwu Dadi.

The tortoise and snake symbolize the deity’s association with water, protection, and northern power. Xuanwu became especially important in Taoism and was honored as a guardian against evil and disease. He is also strongly associated with the Wudang Mountains and martial traditions, which is why illustrations often show him in dark imperial robes holding a sword.
