What creature is J.R.R. Tolkien’s character Treebeard?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien’s character Treebeard is an Ent.

Treebeard, whose Sindarin name is Fangorn, is introduced in The Two Towers. He is one of the shepherds of the trees and lives in Fangorn Forest. Ents resemble walking, talking trees, but they are distinct beings with their own language, memories, and communities.

Treebeard becomes important when Merry and Pippin encounter him after escaping from the Orcs. Their account of Saruman’s destruction of forests helps rouse the Ents to attack Isengard. This event, often called the Entmoot and the Ents’ assault, forms one of the novel’s major responses to industrial destruction.

Readers sometimes confuse Ents with Huorns. Tolkien presents Huorns as mysterious tree-like beings closely connected with Ents, but Treebeard himself is specifically an Ent. The character also reflects Tolkien’s concern with trees, stewardship, and the consequences of damaging the natural world.
