What country hosts the French Open?

The French Open is hosted by France, at Stade Roland-Garros in Paris.

The tournament is officially called the Internationaux de France de Tennis, while “French Open” is its widely used English name. It is one of tennis’s four Grand Slam tournaments and is played on outdoor red clay, making it the only Grand Slam contested on that surface.

The event moved to the newly built Stade Roland-Garros in 1928. The venue was named for Roland Garros, a French aviator and pioneering military pilot. Although the tournament is held in Paris, players from around the world compete there, so the nationality of the champion is not the same thing as the host country.

Common mix-ups include Switzerland, Belgium, and Spain because all have produced prominent tennis players or hosted major tournaments. Wimbledon is in Britain, the US Open is in the United States, and the Australian Open is in Australia; the French Open is the Grand Slam played in France.
