What consortium unveiled Android in November 2007?

The story behind the answer

The Open Handset Alliance unveiled Android in November 2007.

The alliance was announced on November 5, 2007, as a consortium led by Google and made up of handset manufacturers, mobile carriers, chip companies, and software firms. Its stated aim was to promote an open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices rather than leave the market divided among incompatible systems.

At the same time, the alliance introduced the Android Open Source Project and described Android as a mobile platform based on the Linux kernel. Early members included HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Google. The Android software development kit followed on November 12, 2007.

The alliance’s announcement predates the first Android phone. The HTC Dream, also sold as the T-Mobile G1, became the first commercially available Android handset in 2008. The Open Handset Alliance still explains Android’s industry-wide origins, although Google now plays the dominant development role.
