What company was founded by Jeff Bezos?

The story behind the answer

Jeff Bezos founded Amazon.

Bezos established Amazon on July 5, 1994, originally operating it as an online bookstore. The company was first called Cadabra, Inc., but Bezos changed the name to Amazon, partly because he wanted a name suggesting enormous scale. The online store launched in 1995 from a garage-like office in Bellevue, Washington.

Amazon soon expanded beyond books into music, electronics, household goods, and nearly every major retail category. Its business later grew to include cloud computing through Amazon Web Services, video and music streaming, advertising, logistics, and consumer devices such as Kindle and Echo.

A common mistake is to describe Amazon as having started as a general online marketplace. Its initial focus was books, chosen because a bookstore could offer a much larger catalog online than a typical physical shop. Bezos served as chief executive for decades before becoming executive chairman in 2021.
