Stellantis was formed when Fiat Chrysler Automobiles merged with PSA Group in 2021.
The companies announced their planned combination in December 2019 and completed the 50–50 merger on January 16, 2021. The transaction created one of the world’s largest automakers by vehicle sales. Its headquarters are in Amsterdam, while major operations remained spread across Europe, North America, and other regions.
Stellantis brought together brands including Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, Vauxhall, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati. Carlos Tavares, previously PSA’s chief executive, became chief executive of the combined company. The name Stellantis comes from a Latin verb associated with lighting up with stars.
The company is sometimes mistakenly called Fiat Chrysler after the merger, but Fiat Chrysler Automobiles ceased to be the listed corporate name when Stellantis began trading. The deal was a legal merger rather than simply a takeover by one partner.
