What company was formed in 1892 from Edison General Electric and Thomson-Houston?

The story behind the answer

General Electric was formed in 1892 from Edison General Electric and Thomson-Houston.

Edison General Electric had developed from the businesses associated with Edison’s electrical patents and manufacturing operations. Thomson-Houston was a major electrical company led by Charles Coffin and Elihu Thomson. Their combination created the General Electric Company in April 1892.

Although Edison’s name was part of the predecessor company, he did not remain the dominant force in the new corporation. J. P. Morgan had helped consolidate Edison’s business interests, and Charles Coffin became General Electric’s first president.

The merger occurred during intense competition in electrical systems, including disputes over direct and alternating current. General Electric eventually became one of the major industrial corporations in the United States, operating across power, transportation, aviation, and other fields.
