What company was created when JPMorgan and Chase Manhattan merged in 2000?
Answer
JPMorgan Chase
Answer
JPMorgan Chase
The 2000 merger of JPMorgan and Chase Manhattan created JPMorgan Chase. The transaction combined the investment-banking heritage of J.P. Morgan with Chase Manhattan’s large commercial-banking network.
The merger was announced in September 2000 and completed later that year. Chase Manhattan itself had been built through earlier combinations, including its 1996 merger with Chemical Bank. The resulting company was one of the largest U.S. banking organizations and retained the JPMorgan Chase name.
JPMorgan Chase expanded further in the 2000s through acquisitions of Bank One, Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual’s banking operations. Jamie Dimon, who had led Bank One, became chief executive after the Bank One acquisition and later guided the company through the global financial crisis.
A frequent mix-up is with the 1998 Citicorp–Travelers merger, which created Citigroup. JPMorgan Chase came from the separate 2000 combination of J.P. Morgan and Chase Manhattan.
